#19 – What can you do with a 3D pen? (Joshua Tree Triptych)

My husband’s favorite band is U2. Yes, he’s totally jazzed about the recent “Joshua Tree Tour 2017” announcement. Not so jazzed that it’s already SOLD OUT.  Not sure this triptych is rubbing salt in the wound or softening the blow. Regardless, it was a blast to make.

I had a bunch of filament laying around in all sorts of colors, so I thought this would be a good project to use them up. Color didn’t matter since I knew spray paint would be used at some point in time.

Sketched the tree with a pencil, then grabbed my 3D pen.  I chose to draw my first layer with PLA; it sticks to canvas much better than ABS. Built up the tree trunks then finished with ABS to draw the spiked leaves.

Applied several coats of Rust-Oleum Black Satin spray paint.  joshua_tree_2Once it was dry, I painted the canvas background.

Got a thumbs up from the husband, so now I need to figure out where I’m hanging it.
